Tell us a little about yourself
I am a local BC girl. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. With a business mind and a passion for design, I studied abroad in the south of France to pursue my interest in art history, architecture, and language. In 2000, I returned to school to earn an Executive MBA at Simon Fraser University. I currently reside in West Vancouver with my husband and two children.
My design aesthetic is timeless, thoughtful, personal, fresh, and grounded in simplistic beauty.
What role do appliances play in your designs?
Fully integrated appliances are the hallmark of every luxurious kitchen. Period. It can be a splurge, but if the budget allows, I will always incorporate integrated appliances into the design plan, and my clients are never disappointed.
This feature is most often seen in modern kitchen designs, but it can be used to enhance any design style including traditional and country. The result is a sleek and crisp aesthetic with no awkward gaps or spaces. In addition, built-in appliances are space-saving and are an excellent choice when maximizing every square inch is paramount.
What is a kitchen design trend that you are noticing?
Replacing upper wall cabinetry with open shelving continues to be a trend for 2018. Incorporating open shelving into the overall kitchen plan is aesthetically important. It injects a sense of airiness into small kitchens, making them feel less cramped and claustrophobic. In larger kitchens, open shelving provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase a collection of beautiful dishes, bowls, or other decorative objects that can transform the kitchen into one of the most stylish rooms in the house.
What is one feature that homeowners are asking for in their kitchens?
Dedicated pull out recycling bins for paper, plastic, and glass are high on every environmentally responsible homeowner’s wish list. My personal favourite: an organics waste bin that is inset into the countertop…a brilliant idea for getting that unsightly green can off of the counter.
Is there a colour trend in kitchen design?
Yes…black has a simple, modern vibe that adds a visual punch to any space. You’ll find black popping up in kitchen faucets, pendant lights, door pulls, painted cabinetry, countertops, and even sleek appliances. Take Dacor for example, in collaboration with Architectural Digest, Dacor showcases a luxurious collection of show-stopping inspirational kitchens using their Modernist Collection of graphite appliances.
